3 Maintenance Tips for Your Home’s Roof This Fall

It’s that time of year when the weather starts to get a little bit cooler, the leaves are changing on the side of the mountains, and you know that it’s not too long before winter weather is on the way. It’s also a time of year when you should be doing some home maintenance to avoid damage during the winter months, and that includes putting some roofing maintenance on your outdoor to-do list.

1. Get an Inspection. Many homeowners mistakenly believe that if they don’t see an obvious problem on their Utah roofing, they don’t need to get it inspected. The problem is that most roofs are pretty high up there, and you probably can’t see all the nooks and crannies, so there could be a problem that’s not visible from the ground. Only an experienced roofer in Houston will be able to identify these subtle issues and help you understand what needs to be done to prevent them from becoming a serious problem.

2. Make Roof Repairs. If you, or a roofing contractor, do find any missing, broken, or damaged shingles, it’s important to get them repaired immediately. If you wait too long to make roof repairs in Lehi, the snowy weather will arrive and you will have to wait until spring. Meanwhile, the snow, water, ice, and wind are probably doing more damage to your roof that could have been prevented had you decided to fix it sooner.

3. Clean Gutters and Trim Trees. When the seasons change, the leaves change to beautiful oranges, yellows, and reds before falling off the trees. Falling leaves don’t just fall in your yard, though; many of them will end up in the gutters around your home as well. If you don’t spend time cleaning out the gutters, those leaves will create a problem as more precipitation falls and water can’t make it to the drains. Colder temperatures with debris-filled gutters also put your home at risk for ice dams, which can damage your Utah roofing.

Cold weather can also spell trouble for trees that overhang your roof. If you don’t trim back these branches, high winds, ice, and snow can cause branches to break. Worst case, they put a big hole in your roof, but even if that doesn’t happen, they could still do damage to your roof shingles.

Getting roof repairs sooner than later in Houston means you can enjoy the winter months knowing that your roof is doing its job to protect your home and your most precious belongings, even in the harshest winter weather.
